Playing club rugby in Australia

Season
Club rugby runs through the southern winter. The 2026 Shute Shield in Sydney kicked off on 11 April, ran 18 rounds and finished with the grand final on 5 September.
Leagues
Sydney's Shute Shield (12 clubs) and Queensland's Hospital Cup, the top tier of Queensland Premier Rugby (9 clubs), are the two strongest club competitions. Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia each run a Premier Grade, with grades below for every club.
Visa
Working Holiday visa, subclass 417. UK passport holders can apply between 18 and 35 inclusive; the visa costs AUD 840, allows a 12-month stay and lets you work, with a six-month limit with any one employer.
Foreign players and pay
Sydney Rugby Union's regulations from 2026, as reported by Oval15 from the Sydney Morning Herald, allow a maximum of six foreign players in a match-day 23 and cap match payments at AUD 500 per player with no other payments or incentives. We have not read the union's own document.
Clearance
World Rugby Regulation 4: a player leaving one union to play in another cannot be registered or play until the new union has received a Clearance from the old one. Ask your current club and union for it before you travel; it stays valid until replaced by a later one.

The season is the mirror image of the northern one, which is the whole appeal: a player can finish a British or Irish season in April and be playing in Sydney or Brisbane by May, then come home for September. Most players from the UK arrive on the Working Holiday visa. The Home Affairs pages do not address amateur sport directly; the visa permits work, so a club that pays you is an employer and the six-month rule applies to it like any other.

Grades run deep at every club, so an arriving player is graded on what they show at training rather than what they claim. Bring clips and a playing history, and be clear with the club about which grade it has in mind before you book a flight.
