Playing club rugby in the United States
- Season
- Varies by local union, with autumn and spring blocks. USA Club Rugby's national championship is played in May, reached through regional Super Regionals.
- Leagues
- Men's and women's club rugby is split into Divisions I, II and III under USA Club Rugby, with local unions feeding four Super Regionals and then the national championships. Major League Rugby is the professional league.
- Visa
- A B-1/B-2 visitor visa (USD 185) permits amateurs to take part in sports events if not being paid, but not employment or paid performances. A paid or internationally recognised athlete needs the P-1A route, which a team must petition for.
- Registration
- USA Club Rugby's 2025/26 regulations: a player entering from another union after 1 September needs an international clearance; rosters may carry at most five professional or elite players in Division 1, two in Division 2 and one in Division 3; an event weekend roster may include no more than five non-resident players.
- Clearance
- World Rugby Regulation 4: a player leaving one union to play in another cannot be registered or play until the new union has received a Clearance from the old one. Ask your current club and union for it before you travel; it stays valid until replaced by a later one.
The United States is the one country on this list where the visa flatly forbids being paid to play unless you are a professional with a petitioning team. Club rugby there is amateur by rule for visitors, and the non-resident roster cap means a club can carry only so many arrivals from abroad at the finals stage.
Fixtures and seasons are set by the local union, so ask the club which union it plays in and when its league runs before planning travel.
