Ways to play rugby abroad: programmes, agents and platforms compared
There are four ways to get a season abroad: pay a gap-year programme, pay a placement service, register on a database that charges the club, or use a free platform and apply to clubs yourself. They suit different people. The prices below were checked on each provider's own website on 7 September 2026 and will drift, so treat them as a starting point.

What the paid programmes are selling
The fee buys certainty and a soft landing. A club has already agreed to take you, someone has sorted a room, and there is usually a group of other players arriving at the same time. For an eighteen-year-old with no footage, no adult playing history and parents who want a contact number, that is worth real money.
What the fee does not buy is a better standard of rugby or a wage. The programmes place players at clubs who want bodies for the season; the rugby you get is the rugby that club plays. Ask which league the club is in and look up its results before you pay a deposit.
What clubs are actually offering
Whichever route you take, the package at the end of it is set by the club, and clubs say plainly what they have. One club listing on The Rugby Agents reads:
“Players joining our club from abroad will be placed into well paid (£2,000 / month) English teaching jobs and will play for our club on an amateur level.”
Do not confuse a placement with a living
A job arranged through the club, or housing and a stipend, is the normal shape of a deal below full-time professional rugby. Coaches on a long-running forum thread about semi-pro life in England put it more bluntly than any brochure will:
“Vast majority of players in the Championship and League 1 will need a job to get by.”
“For some players its £30-60 a week, plus £x bonus win pay...essentially a bonus payment for continuing a hobby.”
How to choose
A few questions settle it for most people:
- Do you have three to five clips and a verifiable playing history? If yes, you can apply directly and skip the fee. If no, a programme gets you a season, and the clips, to apply with next time.
- Can you afford to lose the fee? Deposits are rarely refundable if a visa falls through.
- Do you want one specific country, or the best package on offer? Programmes are country-fixed; platforms and databases are not.
- Who answers when it goes wrong in week three? A programme has a phone number. On a platform, that is the club.
- Is the price on the website? If you have to request a brochure to learn the cost, budget for a sales call.
