Rugby recruitment for clubs: vacancies that get applications
Most club recruitment fails at the listing stage, before assessment ever starts. The players you want skim dozens of vacancies and reply to the ones that answer their questions without a phone call. This guide covers what to put in a vacancy, how to judge players you cannot watch in person, and the calendar mistakes that cost clubs their shortlist.
Say the number
Vacancies that state a stipend range get more applications, and better-matched ones, than listings that say "competitive package". Players read a missing number as a low number and move on.
A small budget is not a reason to hide it. If the cash is modest, say what else you offer: housing, help finding work, physio access, a coaching pathway. Plenty of players choose the right city and a sorted job over a bigger stipend elsewhere.
Housing and work matter as much as money
An overseas player is deciding on a life, not a match fee. State the housing arrangement plainly: club house, host family, or an allowance, and who pays the bills. If the club or its sponsors can arrange part-time work, that single line widens your applicant pool more than most stipend increases would.
Assess remotely without getting burned
Highlight reels are marketing. Ask shortlisted players for a full half of unedited footage; how someone works off the ball for forty minutes tells you more than their six best carries.
Check that playing history is real. On Rugby Unlocked, player history can be verified and scout-reviewed, which cuts the inflated-CV problem. Beyond that, one video call answers questions no profile can: language level, attitude, and whether their ambitions fit your season. A reference from a previous coach is thirty minutes well spent before an offer.
Plan around visas, not around kick-off
Visa lead times are measured in weeks and sometimes months, and they vary by nationality. Decide your recruitment deadlines from the arrival date backwards. A signed player who lands in round six is a half-season signing at full-season cost.
Keep your vacancies current
Close filled roles promptly. Stale listings waste applicant goodwill, and players talk. A club page with two live, accurate vacancies reads better than one with eight ghosts.
